'Illustrations
with character, stories with soul'

There’s a certain kind of light that suggests a story; a dusty sunbeam across a forgotten book, the glow of a lantern in a summers night... that one fleeting moment before something magical begins.

I’m Kris, a freelance illustrator with a love for the magical, the playful, and the slightly unexpected. My work blends hand-drawn charm with cinematic light and rich colors, creating illustrations that feel warm, authentic, and full of character. Whether it’s a book, a board game, or a (treasure) map for a festival; my unique style adds personality, and a touch of wonder to any story.

I enjoy working with passionate people who value storytelling, give room for creative freedom and can appreciate a little quirkiness.

What I do:
Illustration for editorial & publishing, board games, film & theatre, packaging & product, education, mental health, events, illustrated maps, and more.

Always custom-made. Always with soul.

🌟 Celebrate (Your) Freedom! 🌟
Early this morning, my illustration – created for Haarlem Marketing as part of ‘Haarlem 80 Years of Freedom’ – was unveiled by Robbert Berkhout.
What a joy to launch an illustration like this! Standing 4 meters tall and roughly 16 meters long, it’s a colorful Haarlem scene!

Everyday Freedom
This is a unique illustration displayed on the shop window of the former H&M building. The artwork centers around the theme of everyday freedom and ties in with the celebration of 80 years of freedom in Haarlem this year. It depicts a vibrant scene filled with playful details: music, colorful birds, Haarlem heroes, and other historical references that connect the past with the present.

“This design embodies the theme of Everyday Freedom, where freedom is not only linked to historical events but especially to the small, everyday moments of joy and expression,” says illustrator Kris Lauwen. The illustration invites passersby to reflect on the value of freedom and how it manifests in our daily lives.

The illustration also features a QR code that offers more information about the story behind the artwork. You can also visit the website to explore the Creative Route, a walking tour that guides you past the creations of Haarlem-based artists.

"I didn’t want freedom to be associated only with war and liberation, but also with the freedom to be who you are," says Kris. "For me, freedom means being able to make music, dance, sit in the sun, and be kind to one another." Her design incorporates symbols such as birds, flags, and musicians, along with subtle references to Haarlem freedom fighters like Corrie ten Boom and Hannie Schaft. By placing female figures at the center, she aims to highlight the strength of women in the fight for freedom.
